Animal skin has been used for clothing for centuries, initially for survival, and later as a symbol of status. In recent years, the ethical considerations of using fur have become a major topic for debate, leading to a significant decline in its popularity.
However, animal hides continue to be used for leather shoes, bags and upholstery, while fur remains a part of some cultural traditions and fashion trends.
On display are a small selection of animal skin clothing items and accessories from Elmbridge Museum’s collection. Should animals still be exploited for our benefit?
