Elmbridge Remembers

On 11th November 1919 King George V observed a two-minute silence at Buckingham Palace, London. This marked the first official ‘Armistice Day’, exactly a year after the guns had fallen silent across the Western Front. It took its name from the armistice agreement signed in a railway carriage between the Allies and defeated Germans on 11th November 1918 at 11am.

The Second World War saw a renewed need for remembrance. Armistice Day was changed to Remembrance Day to honour both World Wars.

Today, it remains a day to remember, reflect and honour the sacrifice of all who have died in wars, conflicts and terrorist acts since 1914.

Elmbridge Remembers can be viewed during the Civic Centre’s open hours, which are –
