From the precious jewels of the past to the humble tools of everyday life, accessories can tell historic stories of both popular culture and individuality.
Earlier this year, Elmbridge Museum was invited to bring a selection of objects relating to historic fashion from its collection to share with the BBC Bargain Hunt team during filming at Sandown Park Racecourse in Esher. However, with approximately 4500 items of costume in the Museum collection and 800 fashion accessories, many hours of research and visits to the store were required before we settled on a group of objects spanning two centuries from the 1700s to the 1900s.
This display builds on the Bargain Hunt episode by delving into a variety of accessories in Elmbridge Museum’s collection, revealing both their precious and everyday purposes. The display is hosted by Cobham Library and is free to visit during the Cobham Library opening hours.
