Sending Christmas Cheer

Writing and sending Christmas cards has been a festive tradition for many years. For some, it’s a chance to look back on their year and reconnect with others. For others, it’s simply a way to share Christmas cheer.

The tradition began in 1843, when the first Christmas cards were sent for just one penny. Today, fewer people send cards because stamps are expensive and it’s easier to stay in touch online.

On display are Christmas cards from Elmbridge Museum’s collection. Some are handmade, while others share simple festive messages. Is this tradition fading?

Sending Christmas Cheer can be viewed during the Civic Centre’s open hours, which are –

Monday to Thursday: 8:45am to 5pm

Friday: 8:45am to 4:30pm

Saturday and Sunday Sunday: Closed
