From its headquarters at Giggs Hill in Thames Ditton, and supported by a workforce of 7,000 employees spread further around the country, the Milk Marketing Board (MMB) maintained stable economic conditions for up to 70,000 independent farms.
The history of this company ended 30 years ago with its closure in 1994, but as one of the largest local employers, many local residents remember working there. This display and online exhibition explores the MMB’s long story and continued legacy, 30 years on, as well as the wider history of dairy farming within our local communities.
This year, Elmbridge Museum has expanded its research into the MMB by undertaking an extensive oral history project to record the memories of those who worked there. These recordings will be made available on our website soon.
