Cathy had no idea how this medal came to be in her family’s possession and as an amateur genealogist set out to research Pte Lucas’ history. She was keen to find a living relative to whom she could return the medal having researched her great-uncle who was killed in Belgium in 1914 and realising the horrors endured in the First World War.
Pte Lucas’ medals should have been sent to his father Henry who was nominated as his next of kin. Leonard Lucas was born in Oatlands Park in September 1893, baptised at St Mary’s Church, Oatlands in February 1894, educated at St James’ School and employed as a mechanic at Zenith Motors Ltd, motor cycle manufacturers of Church Street. A true Weybridge lad.
Cathy’s research did not reveal any connection between Pte Lucas and her family. The most promising line of enquiry proved to be the descendants of Pte Lucas’ brother, William James Lucas. However, nothing positive came of this so Cathy has kindly donated the medal to Elmbridge Museum – a welcome homecoming. As he served for over four years Pte Lucas would also have been awarded the 1914-1915 Star and the Victory Medal; their whereabouts remain a mystery.
